Seeking to benefit the Mexican and Hispanic populations in the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the addition of folic acid to corn flour to reduce the number of fetal spinal malformations, better known as spina bifida. This is the most important accomplishment in the history of Latino nutrition in the United States, and was made possible thanks to joint work carried out since 2012 by Gruma and the following civil associations: Spina Bifida Associations, American Academy of Pediatrics, National Council of la Raza (NCLR), and the March of Dimes, all of which supported all the research necessary to obtain this authorization |

October. Gruma inaugurated a USD 55 million plant in Malaysia. The new facility has an annual installed capacity to produce 30 thousand tons of tortillas, fried products and flat breads like wraps and pizza crusts. “It is a very powerful symbol of Gruma’s fundamental values and of its commitment towards its clients, consumers, suppliers, shareholders and the community in general,” said Juan González Moreno, Gruma president and CEO, at the inauguration of the new plant in Kuala Lumpur. |
November. Gruma celebrated 10 years of operating in China. December. Gruma held a groundbreaking ceremony in Huejotzingo, Puebla, where it will build its third Mission tortilla and tostada production plant in Mexico. Annual installed capacity will be more than 50 thousand tons of corn and wheat tortillas, baked tostadas, and fried products. This new plant consolidates Mission-Mexico’s position as a leading national company in corn tortilla and tostada distribution to the self-service channel. |
