GIMSA began its operations in 1949 in Cerralvo, Nuevo Leon, with the inauguration of the world's first plant manufacturing "nixtamal" corn flour , marking Gruma's start with an installed capacity of 15 tons of flour per month.
In the beginning, our nascent industry's process was quite rudimentary, but we improved the processes and devoted years to research and effort to improve the machines' operations and the quality of the flour, and it was through this innovative process that the name and most important brand of "nixtamal"corn flour in Mexico was born: Maseca.
Over six decades, GIMSA has developed an efficient infrastructure for the industrialization and sale of our corn-flour-dough-tortilla chain nationwide. Our operations in Mexico are carried out mainly through two subsidiaries: Grupo Industrial Maseca (GIMSA) and Molinera de Mexico (Molinera).
The legacy of our business, which has prospered over the last 60 years, is GIMSA, Mexico's leading corn flour producer. MASECA, our major corn flour brand has great recognitionandis the most popular of all our brands around the world.
We currently have 17 plants that produce corn flour under the MASECA brand, with the highest quality, leading-edge technology and constant development, which meet the most stringent quality and environmental control standards through which we supply corn flour to our customers, both in bulk and at retail.
We have been listed on the Mexican Stock Exchange since 1990.
Sixty years ago, we transformed corn into corn flour to produce the best tortillas, used to prepare a great variety of delicious dishes in Mexico and thoughout the entire world. The work of this 60 year journey modernized the way Mexico's staple food, the tortilla was prepared, and it remains the staple in the Mexican diet. The tortillerias represent the largest corn flour market in the country and in the recent years we have focused on attracting independent tortillerias, as well as those inside supermarkets. The latter are an attractive source of customers since t we currently supply most supermarkets in the country. Together, both types of customers represent the fastest-growing segment on the market.
At GIMSA we maintain the commitment, through the quality of our products, processes and services, tocontribute to family nutrition.
We produce more than 40 varieties of corn flour to prepare a variety -of food products and we sell packaged corn flour to tortilla and chips producers and on the retail market. Our main product at GIMSA is t thestandard, fine and white textured corn flour used to prepare tortillas.
Currently, our corn flour manufacturing capacity is 2.3 million tons per year. In all of GIMSA's cornflour mills,we use proprietary technology we developedourselves
